Based in Indonesia, Hendra Pratama is a self-taught hand letter and type designer who founded HP Typework, a small independent foundry, in 2014. HP Typework specializes in high-quality typefaces that are expressive and unique, with a handcrafted charm that’s a hallmark of Hendra’s work.
As a typography enthusiast with a passion for hand-lettering, Hendra’s work tends to feature type designs with cursive script styling, ranging from signature lettering to display type, like Groovy.
Groovy was inspired by the famous retro typography designs that hit the scene in the late 60s and remained popular into the 1970s. Based on a hand-lettering project Hendra worked on in 2017, Groovy is a fun and playful script design that embraces the laid-back and fun-loving attitude of the era that inspired its design.
Featuring bold lettering with smooth curves and expressive flourishes, Groovy captures the spirit of summer in the 70s and embracing a popular lettering style that has seen a resurgence in recent years. Reminiscent of handprinted brush scripts, Groovy is an iconic type design that instantly recalls lazy days spent on the beach in California — or at least the essence of the era it was born from.
Thick and curvy, Groovy is composed of two fonts that work in tandem with one another. Groovy Script features upper and lowercase connective cursive script lettering, while Groovy Script Extrude presents heavy drop-shadow shapes for each character, adding instant dimension to your design projects.
With almost 600 glyphs on hand, Groovy provides plenty of additional flexibility through OpenType, including contextual alternates, standard ligatures, stylistic alternates, and swash characters for added visual flair. Four different ending styles are available through the swashes, which can be expanded as needed by creating outlines or converting to shapes and editing with direct selection tools.
This type design is ideal for displays and signage, logos, product packaging, merchandise, apparel, marketing materials, advertising layouts, website designs, posters, book covers, and album art. Groovy is a great choice for branding and identity projects that need a bold script with a heavy vintage spin.
Groovy extends multilingual support to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Central European, and Pan African Latin languages for designs intended for an international audience.
HP Typework currently offers just five products through YouWorkForThem but we’re really looking forward to seeing more of Hendra’s work as time goes on.
