The Angel from Netflix is a fast-paced thriller based on the life of alleged double-agent Ashraf Marwan, son-in-law of Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser. The story of Marwan is complex and debated, and The Angel does an excellent job of relaying the ambiguous tale while keeping your heart rate up. The film is highly effective at inspiring the viewer to research Marwan and the circumstances he lived through.

The Angel is largely set in the late ’60s and early ’70s. In order to capture the historicity of the period, The Angel frequently employs sepia tones and muted light. The film has a soft focus and a subtle graininess that echoes period film rather than digital’s sharp clarity. There are many interior scenes with accurate period furniture, wardrobe and lighting. Everything comes together to brilliantly render the time period of this moody, suspenseful film.

It was therefore critical that the title font reflect the film’s subject and overall vibe. Netflix decided on Veneer from Yellow Design Studio, the perfect choice. The grainy, faded appearance of Veneer exactly reflects how the film’s cinematography created a believable period look. At the same time, The Angel in all capitals maximized Veneer’s striking appearance and instant readability to convey tension, power, and a “must watch” urgency, which is indeed merited.
