Nestled in Santiago, Chile, W Type Foundry was originally founded by Diego Aravena and Felipe Sanzana in 2012 as “Without Foundry.” The pair met during their coursework at the University of Chile’s Lettering and Typography degree program. Their shared love for typography was the starting point for what would eventually become a lasting foundry operation.
Diego still teaches in the same degree program at University of Chile, although in 2016, Diego brought new blood into W Type Foundry. Patricio Truenos and Bana Arasanz both joined and with them, new life was breathed into W Type Foundry’s mission. Patricio teaches calligraphy and graphic design at the university, and Bana is an art director with a love for pop culture.
W Type Foundry’s work runs the gamut of design styles, including everything from display fonts to geometric, wavy, and gothic letter sets. The trio of Diego, Patricio, and Bana continues to pour its dedication into W Type Foundry, and with their collective education and experience in the field, it will only lead to further success as the years go by. The three have also had work selected for the past two editions of the Latin American Typography Biennale, in 2014 and 2016.
One of W Type Foundry’s more recent releases is Cenzo Flare, a beautiful name for an equally beautiful font. Cenzo Flare found its inspiration from a blend of sources, including classic Americana advertisements, Italian posters, and antique signs and logos. With today’s fascination with all things retro, Cenzo Flare is right at home in the current design market.
Its architecture features a modern sans serif bone structure with a touch of vintage flare, creating a type design that essentially straddles two different worlds. It perfectly balances contemporary design with retro style, culminating in letter sets that are fresh and vibrant.
Primarily designed for bold displays, headlines, posters, advertising, logos, branding, and identity, Cenzo Flare is brilliant wherever it is applied. It’s a beautiful addition to book covers, event flyers, playbills, album covers, and more.
A superfamily of 40 fonts, Cenzo Flare offers four subfamilies that include Regular, InLine, Line, and Condensed, in five weights, each with corresponding italics. This gives designers a lot to work with, particularly in branding and identity projects where design cohesion through multiple media is imperative. More than one style can be applied and overlapped to craft uniquely layered lettering details.
OpenType features in Cenzo Flare offer alternate characters in every weight. Multilingual support extends to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Catalan, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, Pan African Latin, and Dutch for global accessibility.
W Type Foundry currently offer 15 products through YouWorkForThem, a range of type designs to suit projects of all kinds. Visit their portfolio to view the rest of their work and bookmark it so you won’t miss any of their upcoming additions. We’re excited to see what they come up with next!
