Established back in 2007, LatinoType emerged as the first digital type foundry in Chile. Miguel Hernández founded LatinoType as a way to put Latin American typography on the map, later being joined by Luciano Vergara and Daniel Hernández to continue in the effort. The trio continues to operate the foundry to this day, ensuring that LatinoType consistently provides graphic designers with type designs that offer beautifully-crafted letter sets with exceptional multilingual support and functionality.
Twelve years after its inception, the foundry has certainly established itself as a premier source of quality type designs. Beyond simply designing fonts, LatinoType has created an atmosphere that prizes creativity and collaboration. Miguel, Luciano, and Daniel are all about sharing their knowledge of the field with those who are studying to become typographers and even those who are merely curious about type design. They regularly conduct workshops with up-and-coming typographers and seek to assist them in their careers through collaboration on numerous projects.
LatinoType has worked with dozens of graphic designers and typographers over the years, cultivating strong working relationships and innovative type systems. One such designer is Sandra García, a type designer in Chile who worked with LatinoType on one of its most recent releases, Emperatriz.
Emperatriz is a contemporary sans and slab serif with a strong antique vibe. Deeply rooted in the Roman tradition, the architecture of Emperatriz feels monumental at first glance – like something you’d see inscribed on the stonework of a centuries-old building. That said, this classic design is anything but dated; the structure is modernized with clean, contemporary lines that make it well suited to branding and identity projects, logos, product packaging, advertising, editorial design, titling, book covers, posters, and marketing materials.
Emperatriz is available in both sans and slab serif styles, in UltraLight, Light, Regular, and Bold for extensive design versatility. As with most of LatinoType’s releases, Emperatriz offers a number of additional features through OpenType, including capitals to small caps, case sensitive forms, discretionary ligatures, standard ligatures, fractions, ordinals, oldstyle figures, small caps, and stylistic alternates. It extends multilingual support to Basic Latin, Western European, Catalan, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, Pan African Latin, and Dutch, covering more than 200 Latin script languages for graphic design projects aimed at an international audience.
LatinoType currently offers 165 products through YouWorkForThem. With so much to offer in such a wide range of styles, you’re sure to find something perfect for your next design project.
