The Northern Block Foundry was established by Jonathan Hill almost 15 years ago. Based in Newcastle upon Tyne, the design studio and foundry has earned a reputation for innovative type designs that blend artistry and individualism with impeccable functionality.
While the foundry embraces varying styles, the core of its work is centered around themes that heavily relate to our ever-changing and modern world, including computers, mobile technology, electronics, and video gaming. The foundry’s type designs always provide extensive design versatility through OpenType, fantastic multilingual support for a global marketplace, and design aesthetics that appeal to designers around the world.
Over the years that have passed since it was initially founded, The Northern Block has continually sought and promoted creative collaboration with graphic designers and typographers from all over. One such designer is Mariya Pigoulevskaya, who entered an apprenticeship at The Northern Block and later joined the foundry’s team. Born in Minsk, Mariya is a senior type designer for The Northern Block.
With a bachelor’s and master’s degree in graphic design, she brings a wealth of design experience to the foundry’s core design team. Mariya’s knowledge of Russian makes her a specialist when it comes to the inclusion of Cyrillic font development. While she is particularly drawn to Swiss style typography, she has worked on a number of font projects in varying themes.
One of her most recent designs released through The Northern Block is Aesthet Nova, a revamped version of the original 2015 design, Aesthet. Inspired by the charisma of the 1970s, Aesthet Nova speaks with a friendly and approachable demeanor. This type family goes “back to nature,” favoring soft corners, rounded serifs, and ball terminals that lend warmth to its messages.
“A smooth talker with a larger-than-life personality,” Aesthet Nova is available in five weights that include Light, regular, Medium, Bold, and Black. Its range of weights makes it perfect for design projects of all kinds: headlines, subheadings, signage, displays, titling, publishing applications, logos, product packaging, marketing materials, merchandise, apparel, posters, album artwork, website designs, social media imagery, banners, mobile applications, and branding.
Aesthet Nova offers a number of additional OpenType features that include fractions, ordinals, superscript, tabular figures, and standard ligatures for greater design flexibility. Its multilingual support is extensive, covering Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Catalan, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, Pan African Latin, Dutch, Basic Greek, and Basic Cyrillic for designs intended for a global audience.
Right now through February 25, Aesthet Nova is on sale for 80% off of its original price so it’s a great time to add this one to your font collection!
