Based in Concepción and Santiago, LatinoType was founded in 2007 as one of the first digital type foundries established in Chile. Over the past 13 years, the foundry has gone on to develop a solid brand for itself as one of the best sources of well-crafted typography in Latin America — and the world.
Operated by Miguel Hernández, Luciano Vergara, and Daniel Hernández, LatinoType strives to create beautiful typography that meets the varied needs of graphic designs around the globe. The foundry has collaborated with many designers and typographers to expand its body of work while sharing its passion for typography in its many forms.
As an independent type designer who has worked on several type designs released through the LatinoType foundry, Sofia Mohr focuses on retail type designs that place a strong emphasis on brand identity.
When it comes to designing new projects, Sofia draws upon her rich and varied life experience. Originally from Brazil and living in a country that is not the one she grew up in, Sofia brings elements of her own culture into each of her designs.
Calligraphy has also played a vital role in many of Sofia’s type designs, adding a handcrafted and expressive touch of artistry to her work. One of her most recent designs in collaboration with LatinoType, Águila, is not really calligraphic in nature, although it does still carry subtle notes of masterful penmanship through its contrast and semi-serifs.
Águila’s design is based on a combination of straight lines, curves, and triangular shapes while also calling upon influence from traditional Didone typefaces. While it’s considered to be a sans serif, Águila actually has semi serifs, “a notable characteristic that gives it a singular appearance,” according to LatinoType.
The high contrast presentation of Águila’s architecture speaks to elegance, high class, and a hint of dramatic flair. This is a strong and sophisticated contemporary type design, one that was primarily intended for display use. Fashionable and luxurious with a playful side, Águila is well suited to displays and signage, advertising, editorial design, logos, product packaging, merchandise, apparel, website designs, marketing materials, posters, book covers, album artwork, broadcasting, and titling.
Águila is available in Thin, UltraLight, Light, Regular, Medium, SemiBold, Bold, Black, and Heavy. In its lightest weights, Águila is soft, rounded, and speaks with warmth; in its heavier weights, the type design presents with a sharper edge and a stronger voice.
Like most of LatinoType’s work, Águila offers ample flexibility through OpenType, including case sensitive forms, ordinals, fractions, standard ligatures, and stylistic alternates. It extends multilingual support to Basic Latin, Western European, Euro, Catalan, Baltic, Turkish, Central European, Romanian, Pan African Latin, Dutch, and Afrikaans for designs intended for an international audience.
If you like Águila but you’re not entirely sure, Águila Thin is available for free so you can try it out for yourself!
