The first font to simulate actual old penmanship, Texas Hero is modeled chiefly on the handwritten script of Thomas J. Rusk—who served as commander of the Texas Army, chief justice of the Texas Supreme Court, and one of the state’s first two U.S. senators from the State of Texas (the other being Sam Houston)—in letters dating from 1834 until 1856.
I chose Rusk’s handwriting not only for its period allure, but for its legibility and ordinariness; i.e., it seemed not to fancy and not too plain. Texas Hero has seen wide use since its debut in 1994. OpenType features include standard and discretionary ligatures, lining and old-style figures, and support for Central and Eastern European languages.
